"Kuromi is a tomboy, but behind her tough appearance, she is actually very girly. She enjoys writing in her diary and reading romance novels."
One of my favorite characters from the Sanrio collection happens to be Kuromi. I really appreciate how much more there is to her, despite looking very intimidating. Going into this project, I really wanted to capture her tough appearance without losing sight of who she really is.
The scene was modeled, animated, and rendered in Maya. 3D textures were created using Substance Designer. The animation was compiled and edited in Premiere Pro.
This is the scene layout for the entire animation. I used four area lights, and three cameras. A seamless backdrop was used for the background.
After my texture was complete, I brought it into Maya and used the normal and displacement maps to imitate the wool texture onto my model. Creating the texture was very easy, but making it fit on the model proved to be the hardest part.
This wireframe shows all of the detail on the model before the textures have even been added. Since the plan was to have her look like a stuffed animal made of wool, I added some fur using XGen in Maya. More specifically, I used groomable splines to get the fur to grow in different directions.
